In 2021, Ed Calderon was able to host one of his most famous training courses at TOPS Knives and took the time to be a guest on TOPS Daily Grind. During his time in Idaho Falls, there were many conversations about edged tools and weapons. Ed, along with Leo (TOPS’ president) agreed that a knife designed by Ed and produced by TOPS would be epic. This was the basis for the design that became El Pionero. It’s a simple design based on what is probably the most common knife type on the globe–a paring knife.

This Knife Blade: Straight-spine blade made from 1095 high carbon steel with a tumbled finish. Handle: Tan canvas micarta handle scales on a full tang. El Pionero The TOPS Knives El Pionero, designed by Ed Calderon, was inspired by the humble paring knife. The story goes something like this: Ed Calderon, when flying to a self-defense training event, wouldn't bring a knife, instead opting to purchase a new knife at his final destination. A basic paring knife for around $10, because sometimes fancier and more expensive isn't the answer.
